A 32-year-old Canadian woman was killed and several people were wounded when a man opened fire at Teotihuacán's archaeological zone on Monday. Authorities said the gunman killed himself after the attack, and police recovered a firearm, a bladed weapon, and live cartridges at the scene. The chaotic incident disrupted one of Mexico's most visited UNESCO World Heritage sites and sparked panicked moments as visitors fled the area.
President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed solidarity with the victims and their families, stating she was following developments closely and had instructed her security cabinet to investigate and provide support. Canada’s foreign minister Anita Anand confirmed that a Canadian national was killed and another person was wounded, with consular officials offering assistance. State Security Secretary Cristóbal Castañeda Camarillo identified some of the injured as two Colombians, a Russian and a Canadian, though the gunman’s identity had not yet been released.
The shooting comes with seven weeks remaining before the first World Cup match in Mexico City, a backdrop that has heightened security concerns around major tourist sites. Eyewitnesses described a surge of panic and people running to exit the area, while local authorities worked to manage access to the site and secure nearby roads.
