A recent groundbreaking study has unveiled an alarming trend: popular social media platforms like YouTube and X (formerly Twitter) are serving as significant conduits, funneling millions of users to AI-powered "nudify" deepfake applications. These apps allow individuals to generate non-consensual sexually explicit images with disturbing ease, often for a minimal fee.
Researchers from the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) conducted a thorough analysis, searching platforms for terms such as 'undress app' or 'nudify app'. Their investigation quickly revealed a plethora of videos actively reviewing and promoting these specific applications. Even more concerning, many of these videos included direct links and promotional codes, offering users free credits to access these illicit services.
The study’s findings paint a stark picture: between December 2025 and March 2026 alone, social networks were responsible for directing over 5.7 million visits to these 'nudify' websites. YouTube emerged as the primary culprit, driving more than 30 percent of this referral traffic, amounting to approximately 1.82 million site visits. Elon Musk's X followed closely, accounting for over 1.3 million visits, solidifying its role as the second-most prominent source of traffic.
The economics behind these operations are equally troubling. While creating deeply invasive, sexually explicit content for an individual can cost as little as $1 per image, the collective revenue generated by these apps is substantial. Reports suggest some of these platforms are raking in as much as $36 million annually, highlighting a lucrative, albeit unethical, industry.
Crucially, the ISD report challenges the long-held assumption that such 'nudify' apps operate only on the dark fringes of the internet. Instead, it demonstrates that their widespread reach is directly facilitated by mainstream platforms, which are widely used by the general public, rather than obscure, lightly moderated forums like 4chan. This points to a severe inadequacy in the existing guardrails and content moderation policies of social media giants. Despite policies that explicitly prohibit sexually explicit content, such as those on YouTube, these deepfake tools and their promotional content are clearly slipping through the cracks, allowing for the widespread dissemination of non-consensual intimate images (NCII).
