Amid rising West Asia tensions, India is urging BRICS to act decisively and coordinate a response to disruptions in energy infrastructure and the security of sea lanes, including the Strait of Hormuz. The push comes as regional actors spar over attacks on energy infrastructure and as the broader crisis tests international diplomacy. India argues that a unified BRICS stance can help stabilize crucial energy corridors and deter further escalation.
In the last 24 hours, two India-bound LPG carriers crossed the Strait of Hormuz, bringing the total number of such vessels in the region to 13. The Marshall Islands-flagged Symi transited through the strait with a crew of 21—eight Ukrainians and 13 Filipinos—carrying around 20,000 tonnes of liquid propane and butane, and heading for Deen Dayal Port, Kandla. The Vietnam-flagged NV Sunshine, carrying cooking gas, completed her transit and is en route to New Mangalore, with an expected arrival around May 18. At present, 13 India-flagged ships are in the Persian Gulf waiting to cross the conflict-hit strait.
Officials said the safe passage of these ships occurred with close coordination among DG Shipping, the ministries of external affairs, defence, and petroleum and natural gas, illustrating a concerted inter-ministerial effort to safeguard energy shipments amid regional volatility. The development underscores India’s dual focus on energy security and regional diplomacy as it engages BRICS to address the West Asia crisis.
Beyond logistics, India’s concerns have featured prominently in BRICS discussions, with leaders acknowledging the risk to energy infrastructure and sea lanes and stressing the need for a collective approach to stabilize the situation. Analysts note that the BRICS bloc could play a constructive role in diplomacy and deterrence if it aligns on coordinated measures.
