AOC Blasts Trump Over ICE Fatal Shootings, Policy U-Turn Sparks Fury

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has sharply criticized former President Donald Trump following his decision to reverse plans to end U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) traffic stops. This reversal comes in the wake of two fatal shootings involving ICE agents in the past week, sparking outrage and renewed debate over immigration enforcement tactics.
Trump announced on Truth Social that ICE would continue traffic stops, emphasizing that mass deportations remain a priority. He stated, "we must be strong, tough, and smart, and we CANNOT give up one of I.C.E.’s most important and effective Crime Fighting tools, THE TRAFFIC STOP! Once we do, we are playing right into the criminal’s hands." This announcement followed pushback from many MAGA figures against changing the policy.
The incidents that fueled this controversy include the killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston, Texas, and Joan Sebastian Guerrero in Biddeford, Maine, the latter occurring in front of his three-year-old daughter. These events have drawn significant public scrutiny to ICE's operational procedures.
Ocasio-Cortez did not mince words, telling The Independent, "This is the guy that said he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue, and people would still support him. And now he has an agency shooting people out in the street. And at this point, it's practically a campaign promise from this guy." She highlighted her view that Trump had "campaigned on cruelty and violence against immigrants," suggesting the current chaos was an expected outcome of his political agenda.
The recent deaths also recall earlier controversies this year, including a protracted fight over funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Democrats had opposed funding DHS after an ICE official killed Renee Good and Customs and Border Protection officials shot and killed protester Alex Pretti in Minneapolis. Following the firing of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in March, her replacement Markwayne Mullin had aimed to make the department less controversial. However, Ocasio-Cortez asserts that Trump's foundational campaign promises of mass deportations inevitably lead to such confrontations and tragedy.
