Chennai's Second Airport: New Sites Emerge! ✈️ Vijay Govt Axes Parandur Project.

The Tamil Nadu government, under the leadership of Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, has officially identified two new sites near Chennai for the ambitious second airport project. This comes after the previous decision to scrap the Parandur project, which faced significant environmental concerns.

The two potential locations are Cheyyur in Chengalpattu district, situated about 100 km south of Chennai, and Manellore near Gummidipundi in Tiruvallur district, approximately 50 km north-northwest of the city. Officials have completed a preliminary study of these sites, assessing their suitability for establishing a large-scale airport.

The decision to drop Parandur was announced by CM Vijay in the Assembly on August 24.

The previous proposal for an airport at Parandur in Kancheepuram district, a flagship project of the former DMK regime, was shelved due to widespread concerns over its potential impact on water bodies, agricultural lands, and risks of flooding. Government officials have submitted a detailed report on Cheyyur and Manellore to the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

A team from the AAI is now expected to visit these shortlisted sites to conduct comprehensive feasibility studies.

This marks a crucial step forward for the project, which is vital for the state's economic ambitions.

It's worth noting that even after a location is finalized and land acquired, government officials have indicated that it would take at least five years for the new airport to become operational.

This project is a key component of Chief Minister Vijay's vision to elevate the Tamil Nadu economy to an impressive USD 1.5 trillion by 2036.
