Democrats Keep Heat on Trump Over Affordability, Despite Falling Gas Prices
Even with gas prices dipping, Democrats are relentless in holding former President Trump accountable for the nation's broader affordability crisis. Will voters connect his past policies to current costs?
Despite a recent drop in gas prices, Democrats are not letting up on their criticism of former President Donald Trump, arguing he is responsible for ongoing affordability issues across the nation. The winding down of a conflict in Iran has contributed to a decrease in fuel costs, with AAA reporting the average price for a gallon of regular gas at $3.99.
This decrease comes after gas prices soared past $4 a gallon due to the war in Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil transit route. While Trump recently declared an end to hostilities with the remark, “Let the oil flow!”, Senate Democrats are keen for voters to remember the initial cause of the price surge.
Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia emphasized this point, telling The Independent, “People are stressed out. People don't forget what the price of gas was on February 27 and they know how much more they're paying now.” Democrats contend that while gas prices are a factor, they are only one part of a much larger affordability problem.
Senator Ruben Gallego of Arizona echoed this sentiment, stating, “I'm glad that gas is down for all Americans, because I don't want Americans to be suffering because of the president's stupid decisions about going to war. But number two, affordability is not just gas, electricity prices, being able to buy a home, being able to buy food – everything's expensive.” Gallego's victory in 2024, despite Trump winning electoral votes in his state, highlights the salience of these economic concerns.
Democrats point to Trump's policies, including tariffs imposed last year and the conflict in Iran, as key drivers of increased prices. These issues, alongside rising gas and grocery costs during the world's recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, were significant factors in the 2024 election. As Trump returned to office, his administration's actions, they argue, have continued to exacerbate the cost-of-living crisis.
