Actor Imran Khan Detained at Mumbai Protest; BJP Leader Demands Deportation
Bollywood actor Imran Khan was detained during a Mumbai protest, stating he was there as a citizen seeking answers. BJP leader Kirit Somaiya has called for his deportation.
Bollywood actor Imran Khan found himself in the midst of political controversy after being detained by Mumbai Police on October 10 from August Kranti Maidan. The proposed protest venue saw Khan participating, an event he documented with a selfie from inside a police van, captioned, “Apparently I’m going for a drive.”
Speaking to the media shortly after, Khan clarified his presence wasn't driven by specific demands but by a fundamental curiosity as a citizen of Mumbai. He stated, “I don't have demands. I am here as a citizen, as a person who lives in this city.
I am here to see why freedom of movement is being restricted.
Why are people's voices being suppressed? That is why I am here.”
The Mumbai Police reported detaining over 400 individuals on Saturday for protesting at August Kranti Maidan. They cited the absence of official permission for the gathering, further explaining that permission could not be granted as Bombay High Court directives mandate protests only at Azad Maidan.
However, activists from CJP (Citizens for Justice and Peace), the group initiating the protest, claimed they had emailed Mumbai Police for permission but received no response.
The protest itself was organized by Tushar Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi's great-grandson, in support of CJP's call for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. This demand stems from a row concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Tushar Gandhi was also detained en route to the site but was subsequently released by the police.
Adding a sharp political twist to the incident, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya has penned a letter to the Mumbai Police. In his communication, Somaiya controversially demanded that Imran Khan, whom he referred to as a “foreign citizen,” be detained and deported.
Somaiya further insisted that Khan be charged for his participation in what the BJP leader termed an “illegal political agitation.” The incident has sparked debate about citizen's rights to protest and the repercussions of celebrity involvement in such movements.
