The fight against polio is gearing up with a massive Pulse Polio drive set to commence on Sunday, June 28. In Anantapur district alone, an ambitious target of vaccinating 2.83 lakh children under the age of five has been set, with dedicated efforts continuing until July 1. This crucial campaign underscores the ongoing commitment to eradicate polio and protect the youngest members of our society from this debilitating disease.
District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) E.B. Devi spearheaded awareness efforts by flagging off a rally at the local Arts College grounds in Anantapur on Saturday, June 27. She passionately urged every member of the community to contribute to the success of this vital public health initiative. Emphasizing the long-term benefits of vaccination, Ms. Devi appealed to parents to ensure their children receive the polio drops, securing their bright and healthy future.
For the Anantapur drive, a substantial workforce of 5,247 staff members has been deployed. They will be administering polio drops at 1,623 booths located across both rural and urban areas. Understanding the need to reach every child, special units and mobile teams will also be stationed at key public gathering points, including bus stands and railway stations. Following the initial booth activities on June 28, dedicated door-to-door visits are planned for June 29 and 30 to cover any children who might have been missed.
The awareness rally, a powerful visual testament to the community's resolve, marched from the Arts College through the Clock Tower to Saptagiri Circle. Participants proudly carried placards and chanted slogans advocating for a polio-free society, culminating in the formation of a human chain. The DMHO also administered a pledge to the attendees, reinforcing a collective commitment to polio eradication.
Beyond Anantapur, the Pulse Polio drive is a widespread effort across India. In Visakhapatnam, 1.89 lakh children are targeted. Chittoor is also making preparations, and in Kurnool Municipal Corporation limits, 229 centres are ready to vaccinate 82,964 children. Across the entire state of Andhra Pradesh, an impressive 49.2 lakh children are expected to receive drops, with 29,873 booths operational. Kerala is also participating, aiming to cover over 19 lakh children with 22,288 booths and 46,663 volunteers. These coordinated efforts highlight a nationwide resolve to safeguard children from polio. Public participation, as highlighted by health officials, remains paramount for the comprehensive success of this extensive vaccination program.
