Sensex slides third day on foreign outflows; Nifty slips below 25,900
Sensex falls about 314 points as FIIs pull money, IT and auto stocks drag the market while traders await rate cues and trade deal updates.
The Indian stock market closed lower for the third consecutive session on Tuesday, with the Sensex down 313.70 points (0.37%) to 84,587.01, and the Nifty slipping 74.70 points to 25,884.80. Intraday, the index fell as much as 363.98 points to 84,536.73.
Foreign institutional investors offloaded equities worth ₹4,171.75 crore on Monday, while domestic institutions bought ₹4,512.87 crore in the previous trade. The day featured sharp volatility on monthly expiry, aided by a weakening INR and ongoing FII outflows, as investors awaited clarity on a possible rate cut in the upcoming FOMC meeting and progress on the Indo-US trade deal.
Among Sensex constituents, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Trent, Infosys, Power Grid, HDFC Bank, HCL Tech, Kotak Mahindra Bank, ICICI Bank and Bajaj Finance were the major laggards. Bharat Electronics, State Bank of India, Tata Steel, Eternal, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Industries were among the gainers.
On the global front, Asian markets were mixed while Brent crude hovered around $62.93 per barrel as U.S. markets closed higher on Monday. The session underscored how volatility and foreign fund movements continue to shape Indian equities, with investors balancing domestic cues against global signals and policy expectations.
