Delhi shifts to hybrid learning as GRAP 4 kicks in amid toxic air

Delhi is under severe air pollution as toxic levels of PM2.5 and PM10 strain the city, prompting authorities to activate Stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP 4). The move underscores the urgency of curbing the deteriorating air quality while keeping daily life and essential activities underway.

To ensure schooling continues while protecting students, the Directorate of Education (DDE) issued a circular on December 13 directing that all government, government-aided, and private schools under the Delhi education framework must conduct classes for students up to Class IX and Class XI in hybrid mode. This means a mix of in-person instruction and online learning wherever online delivery is feasible, with the exact mode determined by each school.

Attendance in person remains possible, but online attendance is voluntary and rests with students and their guardians. The order covers schools run by NDMC, MCD, and the Delhi Cantonment Board, ensuring a uniform approach across the city’s different administrative bodies.

Officials emphasized that the hybrid format would be implemented immediately and continued until further orders, acknowledging the need to adapt to fluctuating air quality while maintaining educational continuity. Parents and educators are encouraged to monitor daily AQI updates and follow school-specific guidance as the situation evolves.

Experts say this approach balances safety with continuity, though some students may face adjustments with screen time and the logistics of online learning. The city’s response reflects a broader regional effort to manage air quality without abruptly shutting down schooling, demonstrating a pragmatic path through a season of acute pollution.
