Abelardo de la Espriella, a far-right millionaire lawyer endorsed by Donald Trump, has emerged victorious in Colombia’s presidential runoff election. He defeated leftwing senator Iván Cepeda in a closely contested race, marking a significant political shift for the South American nation.
De la Espriella secured 12.96 million votes, or 49.66% of the total, narrowly edging out Cepeda, who garnered 12.7 million votes, or 48.7%. The margin of victory was just 250,830 votes, making it a much tighter contest than the first round three weeks prior. Nearly 1.6% of ballots were cast blank, indicating a segment of the electorate’s dissatisfaction with both candidates.
This outcome represents a sharp turn to the right after four years under Colombia’s first and only leftwing president, Gustavo Petro, who was constitutionally barred from seeking re-election. Petro had openly backed Cepeda as his preferred successor, making De la Espriella's victory a clear rejection of the current administration's trajectory.
In his victory speech delivered from Barranquilla, where both his law firm and campaign headquarters are based, De la Espriella vowed to uphold the constitution and adopt an “iron fist approach” against criminal groups. This stance was a central promise during his campaign, appealing to voters concerned about security and order.
The election result is also being interpreted as part of a broader trend of far-right candidates gaining power across Latin America. Recent victories by figures like Nasry Asfura in Honduras and José Antonio Kast in Chile, alongside Keiko Fujimori's current lead in Peru, suggest a regional political shift. De la Espriella received a public endorsement from former US President Donald Trump after the first round, with Trump sharing the news of his victory on social media with the message, “He Won, BIG!”. This endorsement further solidified his image as an 'outsider' and resonated with a conservative base.
