NIA arrests aide in Delhi car blast; car registered in his name
NIA says Amir Rashid Ali aided the purchase of the explosive-laden Hyundai i20 used in the Delhi blast, tying the registered owner to the plot and revealing a larger conspiracy.
NEW DELHI: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested Amir Rashid Ali, an associate of the suicide bomber behind the November 10 car blast in Delhi, for allegedly facilitating the purchase of the vehicle and conspiring in the attack. The Hyundai i20 involved in the blast was registered in Ali's name, a detail the NIA says helps map the larger conspiracy at play. The agency took over the case from Delhi Police and described the development as a major breakthrough in the investigation.
Ali hails from Samboora, Pampore in Jammu and Kashmir. The bomber, identified as Dr. Umer un Nabi, an assistant professor with a Jaish-e-Mohammed module, carried out the attack in the Red Fort area. Forensic work has established the identity of Nabi as the vehicle’s deceased driver, whose role was central to the IED blast that killed a number of people. In the bigger picture, the NIA noted the seizure of an additional Nabi-owned vehicle and has so far examined 73 witnesses, including those injured in the blast. The investigation is being conducted in close coordination with Delhi Police, Jammu & Kashmir Police, Haryana Police, UP Police and other sister agencies as investigators pursue multiple leads to unearth the larger conspiracy.
