Ukraine's New Missiles: FP-7 Nears Deployment, FP-9 in Development!

Ukraine is making significant strides towards strengthening its national defense by rapidly advancing its own ballistic missile program. Kyiv is nearing the deployment of its homegrown FP-7 missile, with the more powerful FP-9 already in development and testing.

This strategic initiative aims to reduce Ukraine's reliance on Western-supplied weaponry and close the long-range strike gap with Russia.

The FP-7 ballistic missile, developed by Ukrainian defense company Fire Point, boasts a range of up to 200 kilometers and can carry a 150-kilogram warhead. According to Fire Point CEO Iryna Terekh, the FP-7 has successfully completed two stages of testing and could be operational within weeks.

Its primary role is to target Russian missile launchers, air-defense systems, and other military infrastructure closer to the battlefield, providing a proactive strike capability rather than solely relying on intercepting incoming threats.

Looking further ahead, the FP-9 missile is designed for deeper strikes, with a formidable range of approximately 850 kilometers and an 800-kilogram warhead. This longer-range capability would enable Ukraine to target military installations deeper inside Russian territory, shifting the balance of power and forcing Russia to commit more resources to protect its assets.

The urgency behind this program stems from Russia's continued use of ballistic missiles against Ukraine, which puts immense pressure on Kyiv's limited stocks of air-defense interceptors, such as the Patriot system. Russian production figures are high, with estimates suggesting around 120-140 ballistic missiles produced monthly.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has highlighted the critical need for a robust response, noting that intercepting these missiles requires a significant number of costly interceptors.

While Ukraine still significantly lags behind Russia in ballistic missile production, the development of the FP-7 and FP-9 marks a crucial step towards greater self-sufficiency and a more independent long-range strike capability. Fire Point co-founder Denys Shtilerman emphasized the importance of expanding production capacity, as producing only a few missiles monthly would have minimal impact.

Efforts are also underway to secure the necessary supply chains for missile components and solid rocket fuel.

This homegrown missile program is a testament to Ukraine's determination to defend its sovereignty and secure its future.
