A satirical "enemy list" featuring figures from Johnny Marr to Lisa Simpson, purporting to be from Morrissey, went viral before his team demanded its takedown over impersonation claims.
Morrissey's representatives have successfully had a viral parody list, titled 'The Malefactors,' removed from online platforms after it spread rapidly across the internet. The post, which humorously claimed to be from the singer's official blog, listed numerous public figures as his 'enemies.'
The satirical Instagram account MozPosting has since come forward, admitting they were behind the creation of the list. They revealed that Morrissey's team contacted them, demanding its removal due to alleged "copyright infringement and impersonation." This incident follows closely on the heels of Morrissey's own public statements about an ongoing legal battle against nine individuals accused of online identity fraud against him. He claimed these individuals were encouraging followers to "actively join factions and movements advocating various political ideas" and suggested one had "connections to an ex-member of The Smiths."
'The Malefactors' list itself was a blend of real-life personalities and fictional characters, creating a buzz across social media. It included names like Johnny Marr (who appeared three times), Machine Gun Kelly, Edward Cullen, IDLES’ Joe Talbot, Kneecap’s Mo Chara, Canada, Nigel Farage, Oldplay, and even Lisa Simpson. Other notable mentions ranged from Princess Diana and Donald Trump to Thom Yorke, Taylor Swift, Keanu Reeves, and a "very judgemental garden gnome named Clive." The sheer absurdity of some entries made the list a source of widespread amusement, regardless of its authenticity.
