Hollywood insider Seth Rogen has finally pulled back the curtain on a long-standing mystery from the set of the hit 2007 comedy, Knocked Up. Rogen revealed that Oscar-winning actress Anne Hathaway was originally slated to star opposite him but abruptly exited the project over concerns about a particularly graphic childbirth scene. Katherine Heigl ultimately stepped into the role of Alison, the high-flying TV producer who finds herself pregnant after a one-night stand with Rogen's character, Ben Stone.
The revelation came during Rogen's appearance on The A24 Podcast with Olivia Wilde, where he was quizzed about the Les Misérables star’s departure. “It was Anne Hathaway who quit [Knocked Up],” Rogen confirmed. Wilde specifically brought up the "crowning" scene, where the baby’s head is shown emerging during childbirth, asking Rogen if that was the reason.
Rogen admitted, “Yeah, I mean… it could have been a hundred million things.” However, he added, “That was what I remember being told. Crowning is a tough one.” He further clarified Hathaway's discomfort, stating, “She didn’t want the crowning of the baby to be visually representative. Even though it wasn’t going to be hers… It’s obviously not real. But she didn’t even want… she felt that it was not her brand.” Rogen speculated that Hathaway might have had a premonition after rehearsals began, thinking, “I don’t know if this is for me.”
Reflecting on her decision, Rogen acknowledged Hathaway's good judgment. “She had a sense, and she knew it was not for her,” he explained. “And history will tell … she has been right about a lot more things than I have over the years. So I think she was probably right.” Despite the early casting change, Knocked Up, written and directed by Judd Apatow, went on to become one of his biggest hits, grossing over $200 million worldwide at the box office.
