Kharkiv Under Fire as Russia Launches Missiles and Drones, Dozens Dead

A fresh Russian strike against Ukraine delivered a brutal toll in Kharkiv on Sunday night, with officials saying at least 10 people were killed and 16 wounded after a residential building was hit by a new cruise missile described as Izdeliye-30. The weapon, a subsonic air-launched missile with a reported range of about 1,500km and a satellite navigation system designed to resist jamming, marks a notable addition to the attack arsenal.

Among the dead were a primary schoolteacher and her son, a second-grader, and an eighth-grader who died with her mother, according to the city’s mayor. The strike underscored the indiscriminate toll of the day’s bombardment on ordinary civilians caught in the crossfire.

The attack was part of a wider campaign in which Kyiv said Russia fired 29 missiles and 480 drones overnight, targeting energy facilities in Kyiv and elsewhere and damaging at least seven locations across the country. The scale of the strike sent tremors through the capital’s energy grid and left several neighborhoods without power.

Ukrainian energy firm Naftogaz said that several critical gas facilities in the central Poltava region were shut down after the attacks, highlighting the broader disruption to Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. The government warned of ongoing risks to energy supply as crews worked to restore services.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said the United States has asked for Ukrainian specialists to help counter Iran-made drones, signaling the war’s expanding international dimension and the fusion of new weaponry with existing threats.

As rescuers and security teams continued the grim work, residents faced power outages, shattered windows, and the familiar wail of sirens slicing through a night already marked by casualty-toll updates. The human cost of the day’s fighting remained front-page news in Kharkiv, a city accustomed to hardship but not to such rapid, overwhelming bombardment.
