A man identified as Zaib Zubair Ansari was arrested within about 90 minutes after he allegedly attacked two security guards in Thane district, near Mumbai, early Monday. The assailant reportedly asked the guards to recite the Kalma before stabbing them. Investigators say the incident is being treated as a possible religiously motivated attack.
The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad has taken over the probe, saying a note recovered at the suspect’s home referred to a “lone wolf” and Islamic State. Officials declined to disclose the exact motive and emphasized that investigators are following all leads. The suspect had reportedly returned from the United States in 2019. The security guards, who were on duty at the time, survived their injuries and are receiving medical care.
Authorities are examining videos from nearby surveillance cameras and interviewing witnesses to determine the sequence of events and any accomplices. While officials have signaled a potential religious angle, they stress that the case remains under investigation and that the full motive will become clear only after more evidence is gathered.
