J&K Statehood Soon: Centre Hints at Early Restoration
Union law minister Meghwal says the restoration of J&K's statehood will be heard very soon, with CM Omar Abdullah urging timely action after a long wait.
Union law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal told reporters in Srinagar that a decision on restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir will be heard very soon. He described the issue as very sensitive but reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to the process, noting that home minister Amit Shah had already assured in the Lok Sabha that the rightful procedure would be followed and that the people would receive what is due to them.
Omar Abdullah, who attended a regional Tele-Law workshop at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar, expressed cautious optimism. He said his government is in continuous dialogue with the Centre, but pointed out that the wait for statehood has stretched to about a year and a half. He hopes Meghwal’s hint of an early decision materialises, while acknowledging the Supreme Court’s urging for a prompt restoration.
Tele-Law, part of the DISHA scheme, was the stated focus of Meghwal’s Srinagar visit, underscoring how technology-enabled legal services sit alongside politically sensitive topics. Yet the political undercurrents dominated discussion, with residents and lawmakers watching for a concrete timeline rather than assurances alone.
The statehood question carries significant constitutional and political weight for Jammu and Kashmir, and observers say a clear timeline would help ease uncertainty in governance, development planning, and electoral expectations.
