Hyderabad woman dies after being doused with petrol and set on fire; husband arrested days later, accused of infidelity and a failed attempt to harm their daughter.
In Hyderabad's Tilak Nagar, a 32-year-old daily wager identified as K Venkatesh was arrested after allegedly dousing his wife with petrol and setting her on fire in the early hours of Wednesday. Police say he also attempted to push their six-year-old daughter into the flames as neighbors rushed to intervene. The 26-year-old woman, identified as Triveni, was rushed to Gandhi Hospital where she died in the early hours of Wednesday.
Family members told investigators that Venkatesh had been harassing his wife for years, repeatedly accusing her of infidelity. The couple had moved from Huzur Nagar in Nalgonda district to Hyderabad about five years ago and lived with their eight-year-old son and six-year-old daughter. After the attack, the husband fled the scene but was arrested in the early hours of Friday.
He has been booked under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (murder) on the complaint of the wife’s father. The post-mortem has been conducted and the body was handed over to the family. Police say the investigation is ongoing to piece together the sequence of events and assess any risk to other family members.
The incident underscores the ongoing issue of domestic violence in India and has prompted calls for stronger protective measures for women and swifter action when abuse is reported. The city awaits a judicial outcome as authorities pursue full accountability in the case.
