A somber cloud hangs over Kolkata's N.R.S. Medical College and Hospital following the discovery of a 30-year-old female nurse found dead inside a washroom late Wednesday night (August 12, 2026). The Kolkata Police have swiftly launched a probe, with officials stating that a post-mortem is currently underway to ascertain the cause of death. Authorities are yet to determine whether the incident was a case of suicide or if any foul play was involved.
The nurse, who was on a night shift, had commenced her duties around 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Approximately two hours later, her colleagues realized she was missing. A search led them to find her unconscious on the bathroom floor within the hospital premises. Despite immediate attempts at medical treatment, she was declared dead by attending doctors. Police officials confirmed that a thorough examination of the scene revealed no visible marks of injury and, crucially, no suicide note was found.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) for Kolkata Police, Kunal Agarwal, stated that the deceased nurse was employed in the gynaecology ward. He added that the police are proceeding with the post-mortem based on the family's wishes and have sealed the incident scene. CCTV footage from the area is being meticulously reviewed, and the deceased's husband has been contacted for further information.
Adding to the complexities of the investigation, the nurse's family has requested that the post-mortem be conducted at a facility outside N.R.S. Medical College to ensure transparency. Medical College, Kolkata has been selected for this procedure. The incident has also drawn parallels to a similar case two years prior, on August 9, when a 31-year-old woman doctor's body was discovered at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, sparking widespread concerns about the safety of medical staff and women in workplaces across the State. West Bengal health minister Sharadwat Mukherjee and top police officers reportedly rushed to the hospital upon hearing the news, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
