Eric Dane, best known for Grey's Anatomy and Euphoria, died at 53 after a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. His representatives confirmed the news Thursday. ALS is a progressive disease that damages nerve cells controlling muscle movement, and most patients live three to five years after diagnosis.
Friends and family said he spent his final days surrounded by his wife and two daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.
Dane rose to fame as Dr. Mark Sloan, nicknamed McSteamy, on Grey's Anatomy from 2006 to 2012 and reprised the role in 2021. The show's fictional Seattle hospital later became Grey Sloan Memorial. He also led The Last Ship and appeared in HBO's Euphoria, a role that kept him in the public eye until his passing.
His career took a darker turn in 2017 when production on The Last Ship paused as he faced depression, a reminder that mental health affects everyone in the industry.
In April 2025, he publicly announced his ALS diagnosis and quickly became an outspoken advocate for ALS awareness and health care access. He spoke at a Washington news conference in June 2025 about health insurance prior authorization, telling attendees that he was speaking not just as a star, but as a patient battling ALS.
In September 2025, the ALS Network named him Advocate of the Year for his efforts to raise awareness and support for people living with ALS.
His death is a loss for fans and colleagues who remember him for his versatility and generosity, both on screen and off.
