Google Staff in New York Struggle with Real Bugs — Not the Tech Kind
Google staff at the Chelsea campus were alerted to a suspected bed bug outbreak over the weekend, with exterminators and a sniffer dog on site. Additional inspections are underway at other NYC offices.
Over the weekend, Google staff members at the Chelsea campus in New York City were treated to an unpleasant surprise. According to a Wired report, they got an email on Sunday alerting them to a potential bed bug outbreak in the workplace. The notice stated that bed bugs were found on the property by exterminators who had come with a sniffer dog.

Workers were instructed to stay away from the office until the course of treatment was finished. Although Google is taking additional precautions, employees were permitted to return by Monday morning. "Out of an abundance of caution," the email stated, inspections are being conducted at other New York offices, including the Hudson Square campus.
Employees were also asked to report any symptoms they thought might be related to bed bug exposure. Employees were urged to report any bed bugs they saw at work to the facilities team. It was suggested that people who discover bed bugs in their homes contact expert exterminators immediately.

It's interesting to note that, although it hasn't been verified, some of the large stuffed animals in Google's New York offices may have contributed to the outbreak. Google chose not to respond to these allegations. Google has previously had to deal with bed bugs in its New York offices. A similar outbreak occurred at the company's 9th Avenue office in 2010 as part of a larger citywide infestation.

Despite their small size, bed bugs can cause significant disruption. These recurring pests affect even tech behemoths like Google. Although workers were temporarily required to leave the office, it appears that Google is only interested in bugs in its software at this point.
This is a reminder to both Google employees and New Yorkers that bed bugs can be found anywhere, including in the offices of one of the most advanced corporations in the world.
