Maharashtra’s political landscape is abuzz with fresh speculation following a meeting between Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and leaders from both factions of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). The meeting, held at Fadnavis’s Mumbai residence on Tuesday evening, has reignited discussions about a potential reunification of the NCP and their possible alignment with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Among those who attended the high-level talks were NCP leaders Praful Patel and Sunil Tatkare. Notably, Jayant Patil of the Nationalist Congress Party, Sharadchandra Pawar (NCP, SP) faction, who was initially reported to be part of the meeting, later denied his presence. The discussions, which reportedly lasted nearly an hour, come amidst growing whispers that the Sharad Pawar-led NCP, SP is considering joining the ruling NDA at both the Centre and in Maharashtra.
Sources close to the matter indicate that the NCP, SP leadership has been gauging the opinions of its lawmakers, with a majority reportedly favoring joining the government. The primary motivation cited for such a move is to better address their constituents' issues and secure development funds. An NCP, SP leader emphasized that reunification with the broader NCP has always been a preferred option for the party, stating it would be welcomed by the leadership if back on the table.
This isn't the first time such a merger has been discussed. Previously, a formula for reunification was reportedly close to finalization but was put on hold. Sunetra Pawar, a prominent figure and wife of faction leader Ajit Pawar, had reportedly opposed the merger plans at that time. Adding a layer of complexity to the current speculation, NCP(SP) leader Supriya Sule has publicly ruled out her faction switching to the NDA, even while hinting at support for the Delimitation Bill. These conflicting signals highlight the internal dynamics and differing views within the NCP, SP regarding its future political trajectory.
