India's Jobless Rate Plummets to 5.2%, Rural Economy Leads the Charge
India's unemployment rate has decreased to 5.2%. Explore how recent trends affect both urban and rural areas, and what it means for job seekers.
The government's most recent labor force survey, which was made public on Monday, showed that India's unemployment rate decreased from 5.6% in June to 5.2% in July. According to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation's (MoSPI) Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), the unemployment rate in May was 5.6% as well.
In July, 5.2% of people of all ages were unemployed, according to data gathered using the current weekly status (CWS) framework. Men's unemployment rates were marginally higher at 5.3% than women's, at 5.1%. The unemployment rate in urban areas increased slightly from 7.1% in June to 7.2% in July. The rate in rural areas, on the other hand, improved, dropping from 4.9% to 4.4% in the previous month.
The unemployment rate among youths 15 to 29 years old decreased from 15.3% in June to 14.9% in July. But in cities, this group's unemployment rate increased slightly to 19% from 18.8% a month ago. The percentage fell more precipitously in rural areas, from 13.8% to 13%. CWS is the term used to describe an individual's activity status based on the seven days leading up to the survey date.
An improvemenGains were also seen in the Worker Population Ratio (WPR), which calculates the percentage of the population that is employed. WPR among those 15 and older increased from 53.3% in June to 54.4% in July in rural areas. In July, WPR for the same age group in cities was 47%. The national WPR as a whole increased from 51.2% to 52%.
