A harrowing tale of survival emerges from Alaska's Bering Sea as a 15-year-old boy clings to life on a capsized boat for days. Rescued with hypothermia, he faced unimaginable loss.
A 15-year-old boy has been miraculously rescued after spending days adrift in the frigid Bering Sea off Alaska, clinging to the hull of a capsized fishing boat. The lone survivor, identified by family as Derek Parker Aghnaanga, endured the harsh elements, tragically losing his older brother and cousin in the devastating incident.
The trio had set out from St. Lawrence Island on Friday, September 4th, for a fishing trip, expected to return by Sunday afternoon. However, when their 18-foot vessel failed to appear, the U.S.
Coast Guard launched an extensive search operation.
On Monday morning, a Coast Guard aircrew spotted Derek on top of the overturned boat. A nearby good Samaritan vessel quickly responded, pulling the young man to safety.
Rescuers also recovered the bodies of his two relatives, bringing a somber end to the search.
Upon rescue, Derek was showing signs of hypothermia, having braved water temperatures around 50F (10C) without food or water for two days after their boat capsized on Saturday. Adam White, the captain of the fishing boat that rescued Derek, praised his resilience, calling him "one tough kid." Despite his ordeal, Derek managed to convey the tragic details, mentioning his brother was still under the skiff and his cousin had succumbed and slipped away the night before his rescue.
Vina Kulowiyi, Derek's mother, shared her heartbreak and pride on Facebook. She explained that her sons were engaged in a cherished family tradition, fishing to provide for their community in Savoonga, a village predominantly inhabited by Siberian Yupik peoples where access to fresh meat can be challenging. "My boys were born and raised to be providers.
A tradition that is passed on," Kulowiyi wrote, highlighting the deep cultural significance of their journey.
Derek is now recovering at home.
His mother described him as her "survivor," noting his incredible strength.
She revealed that he was never afraid throughout the ordeal, spending the entire time praying.
His remarkable story of endurance and faith has touched many, even amidst the profound grief of losing his loved ones.
