Discount voucher website Wowcher has issued an unreserved apology after an email subject line sparked widespread outrage for its insensitive reference to a recent crocodile attack involving a toddler. The email, sent on Saturday, urged customers to “Snap up these deals quicker than a croc can catch a kid!”, drawing immediate condemnation from the public.

The controversial phrasing directly alluded to a distressing incident that occurred on Thursday at Old Hurst zoo in Huntingdonshire. A three-year-old boy was reportedly involved in an incident where he ended up in an enclosure with Nile and saltwater crocodiles. He was subsequently taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge with serious injuries and is currently in a critical but stable condition. A 30-year-old man from Norfolk has been bailed as inquiries continue into the incident.
