In a significant development that has drawn considerable attention, Sangeetha, wife of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, has officially withdrawn her divorce petition. The decision was made on Friday before a family court in Chengalpattu, a town situated near the bustling city of Chennai, signaling a potentially new chapter for the prominent couple.
Judge D. Sujatha presided over the proceedings and granted Sangeetha the permission to withdraw her plea. This was done after Sangeetha appeared via video conferencing and clearly stated her wish not to pursue the legal proceedings at this time. Vijay’s legal counsel, when issued a notice by the court, confirmed they had no objections to the withdrawal. Importantly, the court has also granted Sangeetha the liberty to file a fresh petition in the future, should she deem it necessary.
The original divorce petition was lodged by Sangeetha in February under specific sections of the Special Marriage Act (Section 27(1)(a), (b), and (d)). At the time of filing, she had made serious allegations, including adultery and mental cruelty. Sangeetha had previously informed the court that she had attempted to resolve their differences amicably but without success. Furthermore, she stated that she had delayed initiating legal proceedings to safeguard the studies and emotional well-being of their children. Her petition had also sought maintenance and the right to reside in the couple’s Neelankarai home.
This legal saga saw both Vijay and Sangeetha fail to appear at an earlier hearing on June 20 this year. Their lawyers had then requested permission for their clients to attend virtually, citing valid security concerns and the procedural difficulties that often arise due to their status as highly public figures. With Sangeetha's statement recorded and Vijay's lack of objection noted, Judge Sujatha formally dismissed the petition as withdrawn, leaving open the possibility for future legal action if circumstances change.
