NDA Surges in Kerala Local Polls, Seizes Thiruvananthapuram

In Kerala's latest three-tier local body polls, the BJP-led NDA scored a landmark breakthrough, clinching power in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation and securing a hat-trick victory in Palakkad while also making northward strides in Thripunithura municipality. The alliance widened its reach by securing outright majorities in two municipalities and claims across numerous grama panchayats, signaling a shift in the local political dynamic.

Across the state, the NDA's tally includes 249 members to grama panchayats, 37 to block panchayats, two to district panchayats, 320 to municipalities, and 60 to Corporations, representing a meaningful presence in Kerala's local governance landscape. The BJP-led coalition also tallied 1,417 seats in grama panchayats, 53 in block panchayats, 324 in municipalities, and 93 in Corporations, with one district panchayat seat, marking a notable 15% of the total vote share.

BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar framed the results as a public endorsement of a vision for a developing Kerala, suggesting an end to the LDF’s decade-long hegemony in the state. He also dismissed allegations of any pre-poll “adjustments” with other parties in the Thiruvananthapuram corporation, emphasizing the NDA’s evolving strength rather than any informal alliances.

Despite these gains, observers caution that the NDA remains a distant third statewide in both seats and vote share, with the Congress-led UDF and the CPI(M)-led LDF continuing to hold sway in the larger political contest. Still, party leaders argue the results reflect qualitative improvement and could set the stage for future, more competitive editions of the local body polls.
