Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal is in stable condition after undergoing a 90-minute surgery following an attack with a 'kirpan' at a gurdwara in Nanded, Maharashtra. The incident occurred on Thursday at Gurdwara Mata Sahib Devan Ji Mugat, where a 60-62-year-old volunteer, Jaspal Singh, allegedly assaulted him.
Badal, a former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister, was rushed to Yashosai Hospital in Nanded. Doctors reported that the surgery, which lasted an hour and a half, successfully repaired a tendon injury and his ulnar artery nerve. He suffered a sharp penetrating wound but is now considered out of danger. After the procedure, Mr. Badal was discharged on Friday afternoon and immediately proceeded to the Nanded airport to fly back to Punjab.
Visuals circulating showed Mr. Badal walking within the hospital premises, his right hand wrapped in a cloth. This incident marks another attempt on his life, recalling a similar attempt at the Golden Temple entrance in December 2024. Despite the ordeal, Mr. Badal reportedly stated, "Not scared," reflecting resilience.
Police have booked the accused, Jaspal Singh, under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for attempt to murder and voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons. Singh, who holds commerce and law degrees and is based in Pune with his family, had been working as a sewadar at the gurdwara for the past two years. Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the attack. Omar Abdullah also condemned the attack on the SAD leader.
