A disturbing incident has unfolded in Andhra Pradesh, where a 25-year-old man from Vijayawada has been missing for nearly 40 days after being taken into police custody. His family alleges he may have been subjected to custodial torture and possibly killed, a claim that has sparked widespread concern and political pressure.
The individual, Gade Sai Krishna, was reportedly picked up by Krishna Lanka police from Markapuram in Prakasam district on May 9. Since then, his whereabouts have remained unknown. His mother, Gade Vijayalakshmi, recounted spending weeks desperately visiting various police officers in Vijayawada, seeking information about her son, but received no clear answers.
Facing a wall of silence, Vijayalakshmi took her fight to the High Court, filing a habeas corpus petition on June 4. She sought a directive for authorities to locate and produce her son, or his mortal remains if he was no longer alive. The High Court responded by instructing the Krishna Lanka police inspector to find Sai Krishna and present him before the court by June 15.
As the situation escalated into a major controversy, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu intervened late Wednesday night. He ordered a comprehensive probe into the disappearance, assigning senior IPS officer Narasimha Kishore, the East Godavari superintendent of police, to lead the investigation. Additionally, Inspector SSV Nagaraju of Krishna Lanka police station was suspended. An official statement from the Chief Minister's Office confirmed the government's serious view of Sai Krishna's disappearance.
The investigating officer has since visited the Krishna Lanka police station to gather crucial evidence for a report that will be submitted to the government shortly. The opposition YSR Congress Party has been vocal in its demand for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, highlighting the gravity of the allegations and the need for an impartial inquiry. The family's plea for justice and answers continues as the state grapples with this unsettling case.
