The controversy erupted after Mbappe's crucial penalty secured a 1-0 win for France in Philadelphia, propelling them into the quarter-finals. Senator Amarilla subsequently took to social media platform X, publishing a lengthy and offensive post. In her remarks, she described Mbappe as a "colonised Cameroonian, desperately trying to pass himself off as French," and a "brute" who lacked education. Shockingly, she also suggested that Paraguay's players should have resorted to physical violence against him after the match.
Mbappe responded swiftly and decisively. In a powerfully worded statement, he not only defended himself but also championed the integrity of the Paraguayan players. "Madame Celeste Amarilla, you are a despicable woman and unworthy of your position. You do not represent Paraguay, that country which has sweated passion and honour throughout the competition," Mbappe wrote. He further asserted, "Through your recklessness and your brazen racism, the entire world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort that your players accomplished during this World Cup, making way for an incompetent woman who gives the worst possible image of her country. The federation has announced its intention to file a criminal complaint against the senator, stating that "These remarks are criminal and reprehensible. They must be prosecuted."
