Rupee Recovers as RBI Steps In, Nears 90 Again
The rupee rebounds after RBI intervention, climbing from Friday's low as traders eye a data-heavy week and global dollar strength.
The rupee clawed back part of Friday’s losses, gaining 50 paise to settle at 89.16 per U.S. dollar in the spot market, snapping a slide that saw it hit a lifetime low of 89.66. Market participants attributed the move to likely intervention by the central bank, supported by streams of funds tied to MSCI index rebalancing that nudged the domestic unit higher. While the bounce offered relief, traders cautioned that the underlying trend remains fragile as foreign fund outflows persist, the trade deficit widens, and the dollar index stays firm against major currencies.
Early in the trading session, the rupee also rose about 49 paise to 89.17 per dollar, helped by a positive opening in domestic equity markets and what appeared to be continued RBI support. Analysts noted that a favorable dose of liquidity and sentiment around stocks can reinforce the currency's resilience, even as the longer-term path remains sensitive to policy cues and external shocks.
Looking ahead, a data-heavy week is in store for India, with inflation, growth gauges, and external sector data on the calendar. Traders say the RBI’s stance will continue to be tested as numbers arrive and crude prices drift and recover. The key question for many is whether the currency can sustain a move away from the 90-per-dollar mark without renewed bouts of volatility, given the persistent pressure from outflows and a relatively wide current account gap.
With the rupee hovering near the 90 level, market watchers say the coming days will matter for both importers and exporters. Any fresh signals from policy makers, or shifts in global risk appetite, could tip the balance. For now, the bounce provides a moment of relief, but the overall outlook remains cautious as the market weighs domestic fundamentals against a stronger greenback and ongoing demand for dollars in global markets.
