Peter Cullen, the Canadian voice actor whose distinctive baritone brought to life Optimus Prime in the Transformers franchise and numerous other beloved characters, has passed away at the age of 85. Cullen died peacefully on August 26 at his home in Los Angeles, surrounded by loved ones. His agent, Kevin Motley, confirmed his passing, though a cause of death was not disclosed.
Cullen's most renowned role began in 1984 when he first voiced Optimus Prime in the original Transformers animated series.
His portrayal of the Autobot leader, characterized by a deep, authoritative yet warm tone, quickly became iconic.
He reprised the role in the 1986 animated film, The Transformers: The Movie, and continued to lend his voice to Prime across various animated projects, video games, and most notably, Michael Bay's live-action Transformers film franchise starting in 2007.
His most recent appearance as the character was in 2023's Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
The inspiration for Optimus Prime's unique voice and temperament came from a deeply personal source: Cullen's older brother, Larry, a U.S. Marine and Vietnam War veteran. When Cullen shared that he was auditioning for the voice of a heroic truck, Larry advised him to embody strength tempered with gentleness, rather than exaggerated bravado.
This advice profoundly shaped Cullen's approach, giving Optimus Prime his signature blend of authority and compassion.
Beyond Optimus Prime, Cullen's versatility shone through in a multitude of other memorable roles. He was the melancholic voice of Eeyore in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and subsequent Winnie the Pooh projects.
Fans also recognize his voice as KARR in Knight Rider and Monterey Jack in Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers.
His talents extended to providing the chilling vocal effects for the Predator in the 1987 film Predator and voicing King Kong in the 1976 remake.
Cullen's career spanned more than five decades, leaving an indelible mark across animation, television, film, and video games. His passing marks the end of an era for countless fans who grew up with his characters. His legacy as a voice acting titan, particularly as the noble leader of the Autobots, will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations.
