Monsoon Session 2026: Justice Varma Report & Major Political Showdowns Begin

The upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament, scheduled to run from July 20 to August 13, 2026, is set to be a politically charged affair, with several key issues lined up for debate. A central focus will be the tabling of the jurists’ report concerning Allahabad High Court judge Yashwant Varma by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. This development is particularly significant given that Justice Varma's resignation has not yet been accepted by President Droupadi Murmu, suggesting that the report's findings could lead to further action.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju officially announced the session dates, emphasizing the government's hope for "meaningful debate, discussion and decisions on issues of national importance." However, expectations are for a "stormy session" as the Opposition gears up to confront the government on a range of contentious issues.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and other opposition figures are expected to raise concerns over alleged donation theft in the Ram Mandir project. Demands for Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation are also anticipated, stemming from recent question paper leaks and accusations of widespread exam irregularities. Furthermore, the Opposition plans to bring forward its allegations of "vote theft" and question the role of the Election Commission, following a letter sent by twenty-four opposition parties to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant regarding alleged poll malpractices and bias.

Beyond these high-profile debates, Speaker Om Birla is also expected to make decisions on two significant political merger appeals. Twenty rebel Trinamool Congress MPs are seeking to join the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), while six lawmakers from the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) faction are keen to merge with the Shiv Sena group led by Eknath Shinde. These decisions carry substantial weight, as the ruling NDA coalition could move closer to a two-thirds majority if these proposals are approved, especially with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) no longer part of the INDIA bloc.

The report on Justice Varma centers on allegations of financial irregularities, which reportedly surfaced following a fire incident at his Delhi residence last year.
