Israel to halt operations of several humanitarian organisations in Gaza starting in 2026

Israel said it has suspended more than two dozen humanitarian organisations operating in the Gaza Strip for failing to comply with new registration rules that took effect earlier this year. The list includes Doctors Without Borders and CARE. The rules are framed as a safeguard to prevent infiltration by Hamas and other militant groups.

Under the new regime, aid groups must register the names of their workers and reveal details about funding and operations in Gaza. They will also face ideological criteria—disqualifying organizations that have called for boycotts of Israel, denied the October 7 attacks, or expressed support for international court cases against Israeli leaders could be barred from operating.

Officials say more than 30 groups, about 15% of organisations active in Gaza, had failed to comply. Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli said: The message is clear: humanitarian assistance is welcome — the exploitation of humanitarian frameworks for terrorism is not.

Aid groups and their advocates warn the move would have a catastrophic impact in Gaza, where organisations support hospital capacity and basic relief for civilians. The UN and aid groups have denied Hamas siphoning of aid, a claim cited by Israel to justify tighter controls. The suspension could affect roughly one in five hospital beds supported by international aid.

The plan drew criticism from several foreign ministers who called the move restrictive and unacceptable. From 2026, only registered groups would be allowed to operate in Gaza, with non compliant organisations suspended from the territory.

Whatever the outcome, civilian access to medical care and relief in Gaza could be affected as aid flows are redirected toward a smaller set of registered organisations.
