A section of the parapet segment of the elevated Metro 4 corridor reportedly collapsed and fell onto an autorickshaw and a car, triggering a swift response from police and project authorities. The collapse has raised concerns about safety protocols on large infrastructure sites and the risk faced by workers and bystanders nearby.
In a move signaling accountability, authorities imposed a ₹5 crore fine on the contractor responsible for the site. The day after the incident, reports also indicated that the project engineer was sacked as part of preliminary actions. Investigations are expected to determine whether lapses in design, supervision, or on-site practices contributed to the tragedy.
The Mulund incident comes amid ongoing guardrails and safety reviews across other metro works in the city. Officials pledged a thorough probe and an assessment of safety standards to prevent repetition of such tragedies and to better protect workers and residents living near construction zones.
