Melrose Launches £73M Compensation Fund After California Chemical Incident

Melrose, the parent company of GKN Aerospace, has announced a significant compensation program worth up to $100 million (£73.4 million) following a chemical incident at its Garden Grove, California, facility earlier this year. This move aims to provide financial relief to residents and businesses who were impacted by an evacuation order issued in May.

The compensation scheme is designed to cover various damages incurred by those affected, including costs for hotel stays, meals, transport, and lost wages. The FTSE 100 firm stated that the claims program is expected to commence in the coming weeks and will remain active until 2027, ensuring a reasonable window for claims submission.

The incident in question occurred at the end of May when an overheating chemical tank at the GKN Aerospace site triggered an emergency services response and led to the evacuation of surrounding areas. While the event caused considerable disruption, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office (OCDAO) has concluded its criminal investigation, confirming that no criminal charges will be brought against the company.

Despite the resolution of the criminal probe, Melrose is still navigating the financial repercussions of the incident.

The company anticipates restarting full manufacturing operations at the Californian site on September 28.

However, it warned last month that it expects additional costs ranging from £25 million to £30 million in the latter half of 2026 due to the incident, alongside reduced operational capacity.

This financial strain also led the group to temporarily pause its £175 million share buyback program as it assessed the full impact.

GKN Aerospace is a key player in the aviation sector, manufacturing engine parts for jet fighters and military helicopters, as well as providing technology for civil aircraft.

The compensation program underscores Melrose's commitment to addressing the community impact while working to restore its operations and financial stability.
