Boulter's US Open Nightmare: Crushing Defeat in 58 Minutes

British number one Katie Boulter experienced a challenging day at the US Open, suffering a rapid defeat in the second round. She won just one game in a 58-minute match against Wimbledon runner-up Karolina Muchova, a Czech seventh seed. The final score was a stark 6-1, 6-0.

Originally slated for an outer court, the match was moved to the 14,000-capacity Louis Armstrong Stadium due to heavy rain in New York. However, fans anticipating a thrilling encounter might have felt short-changed as Boulter struggled to find her rhythm against an in-form Muchova.

Boulter herself described it as "a bad day at the office, times two." She openly admitted to struggling with the conditions, including the roof and the noise, stating she "let things distract me" and "let it get to me." She acknowledged that she's not usually so aware of her surroundings during a match and needs to handle such situations better.

Her performance reflected her discomfort, particularly with her serve.

She recorded eight double faults and no aces, winning only 33% of points behind her first serve. Boulter also failed to fend off any of the seven break points she faced and accumulated 22 unforced errors against only four winners.

In stark contrast, Muchova displayed impressive form, hitting 14 winners and committing just nine unforced errors, showcasing smart drop shots and piercing groundstrokes throughout the match.

Fellow British players Jacob Fearnley and Toby Samuel also failed to advance in the men's third round, both losing to seeded opponents. However, Francesca Jones offered a glimmer of hope for the British contingent, successfully completing and winning her first-round match after it was interrupted by rain earlier in the week.
