Riverhead, NY – Rex Heuermann, the architect accused in the infamous Gilgo Beach serial killer case, was sentenced to life in prison without parole on Wednesday, bringing a grim resolution to a decades-long saga that terrorized Long Island. The sentencing in Riverhead, New York, was marked by powerful victim impact statements, including a scathing address from Danielle Mack, sister of victim Valerie Mack.
Mack confronted Heuermann directly, asserting that he believed women were "his to destroy" and that his monstrous nature rendered him incapable of remorse. "He is a selfish, entitled man who felt like my sister and the others were his to destroy," she told the court, as Heuermann, dressed in a black suit, looked down with his hands in his lap.
Heuermann received life sentences for the murders of Valerie Mack, Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Lynn Costello, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Jessica Taylor, and Sandra Costilla. Beyond these, he also admitted to killing an eighth woman, Karen Vergata, during his grisly crime spree which spanned from 1993 to 2010, though he was not charged in her specific slaying. His method often involved strangling his victims and dismembering some before scattering their remains along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach.
When given the opportunity to speak, Heuermann offered a brief, ambiguous statement. "There are no words I can say, but I am responsible for what was said in this room today," he reportedly stated, adding, "The words I would say have no meaning and I’m going to leave it there at this time."
Judge Timothy Mazzei, visibly emotional at times during the victim testimonies, did not mince words in his condemnation of Heuermann. "You’ve been described as a very big man but you’re a disgusting and despicable small man – if you’re a man at all. And you’re a coward," the judge declared before delivering the sentence.
The long-awaited sentencing offers a measure of finality to the families of the victims, who have endured years of uncertainty and grief since the remains were first discovered over a decade ago.
