Rex Heuermann pleads guilty to seven murders and admits an eighth, bringing closure to families after decades of waiting.
Rex Heuermann, a 62-year-old Massapequa resident, pleaded guilty to murdering seven women and admitted to killing an eighth in a confession delivered at the Arthur M. Cromarty Court Complex in Suffolk County, New York. The victims were Melissa Barthelemy, 24; Megan Waterman, 22; Amber Costello, 27; Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25; Jessica Taylor, 20; Valerie Mack, 24; and Sandra Costilla, 28, killed over nearly two decades.
Heuermann had long been identified by investigators as the suspected Long Island Serial Killer, and his plea follows years of meticulous work by law enforcement. He previously stood trial on seven murder charges but now agreed to life sentences with no possibility of parole and to relinquish the right to appeal in exchange for no further prosecution for the eight victims. He is due to be sentenced on June 17.
As part of the deal, Heuermann also agreed to be interviewed by the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit, potentially offering insights into the crimes and the offender’s patterns.
The case also includes Karen Vergata, who disappeared in 1996 and was identified in 2023 through genetic genealogy. Authorities say Vergata’s death is connected to Heuermann’s crimes, completing the list of eight victims acknowledged in the plea.
Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney spoke to reporters after the plea, emphasizing that the case is ultimately about the victims and their families. Gloria Allred, who represented several families, highlighted the bravery of the victims’ relatives as they pursued answers over many years. Families have waited a long time for accountability, and today’s development brings a measure of closure.
The plea marks a somber milestone in a chilling chapter for Long Island, ending a high-profile investigation that stretched across nearly two decades and left communities grappling with fear and grief. While the legal resolution is decisive, the impact on the victims’ families—who have endured years of doubt, waiting, and public scrutiny—remains profound as they move forward.
