Security Tight in Bhopal as Protests Erupt Over 'Love Jihad' Assault
Police tighten security in Bhopal after protests by the Muslim community over an assault linked to 'love jihad', with arrests and ongoing investigations.
Security personnel have been stepped up across Madhya Pradesh's capital, Bhopal, as hundreds from the Muslim community gathered to protest an assault during a dispute labeled as related to 'love jihad'. The demonstrations began near Hamidia hospital on May 12 and culminated with a march to the Police Commissioner’s office. The protest leaders, including city Qazi Sayed Mushtaq Ali Nadwi, demanded a thorough investigation and accountability for those involved.
Three people were arrested on May 13 in connection with the protests after an FIR was filed following stone-pelting during the old-city rally. Police say more suspects are being identified, with searches ongoing and video footage being analyzed to aid detentions. Ayush Gupta, the Deputy Commissioner of Police for the Bhopal zone, said authorities are also engaging with community leaders to maintain calm and prevent further incidents. He noted that the situation on the ground remains under control, and additional personnel have been deployed to sensitive locations.
Security arrangements have been intensified in areas deemed sensitive, including Aishbagh, Jahangirabad, and the vicinity of Taj-ul-Masajid and Hamidia hospital, with police aiming to prevent any untoward events while keeping lines of dialogue open with community figures.
During a meeting with protestors, Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar assured them that the investigation would proceed impartially. The community, however, has alleged that the FIR in the assault case targets unidentified individuals and that provisions were lenient given the video evidence of the incident. Police are scrutinizing such claims as they pursue a broader account of the events.
Overall, officials described the area as currently calm, even as investigations continue and protests echo ongoing tensions surrounding the so-called 'love jihad' issue in the city.
