Apple and Google are rolling out encrypted RCS messaging that lets iPhone and Android users chat with greater privacy. In conversations, a lock icon will indicate encryption, part of the broader RCS rollout.
RCS provides typing indicators, read receipts, emoji reactions, richer media sharing and longer messages, aiming to modernize cross-device texting and replace SMS. For years, Android-to-iPhone chats suffered issues like broken group chats and uneven features, fueling the 'green bubble' stigma.
Apple began supporting RCS in 2023 after regulator pressure and ongoing user feedback. The latest beta rollout is gradual, so some users may not see the feature yet.
Industry watchers say this could boost privacy for millions and make cross-device chats more seamless. It won't instantly erase all issues, but it's a notable shift toward interoperable, more secure messaging.
On the iOS side, iOS 26.5 is enabling encrypted messaging with Android in certain beta channels. For users, enabling the feature may require updating to the latest software and opting into the beta.
