Scotland’s World Cup preparations have been hit by a major setback following news that star midfielder Billy Gilmour has been ruled out of the tournament. The blow comes after Gilmour suffered a knee injury during Scotland’s 4-1 friendly victory over Curaçao at Hampden Park on Saturday.

Despite the win, which featured two goals from new Rangers signing Lawrence Shankland, the atmosphere has turned bittersweet for the Tartan Army. Manager Steve Clarke now faces a massive headache as he looks for a replacement to anchor the midfield before their opening Group C match against Haiti in Boston.

One name that has jumped to the top of the list is Manchester United’s Tyler Fletcher. The 19-year-old—son of former Scotland captain Darren Fletcher—made his senior international debut as a half-time substitute against Curaçao. Clarke has confirmed that Fletcher is a strong candidate to take Gilmour’s spot, having impressed the coaching staff during training sessions this week.

While Fletcher is in the mix, other players like Connor Barron, Andy Irving, and Lennon Miller are currently on standby. However, Fletcher’s recent experience playing for his father’s old club and his seamless integration into the squad this week might give him the edge. "He's trained well this week, so he's a little bit closer than the other three," Clarke noted after the game.

The 4-1 win over Curaçao provided some much-needed confidence for the team, but losing a player of Gilmour’s caliber just as they prepare to face Haiti, Morocco, and Brazil is far from ideal.
