India's November jobs data: unemployment falls to 4.7%, LFPR up
New Delhi reports unemployment easing to 4.7% in November, with rural gains and rising female participation signaling a cautious labour-market upturn.
New Delhi — India's November labour force bulletin shows unemployment falling to 4.7% among people aged 15 and above, an eight-month low, while the overall picture remains blurred for the broader economy. The monthly data release notes the labour force participation rate rising to 55.8%, the highest since April, suggesting more people are joining or staying in the workforce.
Unemployment declined across genders, with male unemployment at 4.6% in November, down from 5.1% in October, and female unemployment easing to 4.8% from 5.4%. Rural unemployment dropped to 3.9%, while urban unemployment stood at 6.5%, matching its April low. Among females, rural unemployment fell from 4.0% to 3.4%, and urban female unemployment declined from 9.7% to 9.3%.
For males, rural unemployment eased to 4.1% (from 4.6%) and urban unemployment to 5.6% (from 6.1%). These shifts contributed to a broad-based improvement across the board during April–November 2025. The statistics office said the rise in the labour force participation rate was largely driven by gains in rural employment and rising female participation. The survey, which began in April, tracks employment trends across age groups and locations, offering a snapshot of how different segments are faring in a recovering economy.
Analysts say the November figures point to a more resilient labour market, even as urban demand remains uneven. While one month of data does not guarantee a sustained trend, the breadth of improvement across genders and rural areas suggests the recovery may be gaining traction and could influence policy and consumer sentiment in the months ahead.
