A UK-Iranian dual national has been arrested in London, marking the sixth detention in the ongoing investigation into an alleged terror plot near RAF Fairford. This development comes amid heightened tensions and claims of foreign state involvement in the security incident.
The 27-year-old man was apprehended on Thursday afternoon in the Borough of Westminster, London, on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts, according to Counter Terrorism Policing. This follows the earlier arrests of five British men, all in their twenties and from London, who were initially detained in Whelford, Gloucestershire, near the military base.
These five individuals have since been released on police bail, though they remain under strict conditions and investigation.
The initial arrests stemmed from a public tip-off after a villager reported seeing three vans and a group of masked men near RAF Fairford. The suspects were initially held on suspicion of explosives offences before later being questioned regarding terrorism offences.
The investigation has taken a significant political turn with Prime Minister Andy Burnham stating there are "strong indications that Iran played a part" in the suspected plot. These remarks prompted Iran's foreign ministry to summon the British ambassador, rebuffing the claims and suggesting they were a distraction from British military operations against Iran.
RAF Fairford is a strategically vital site, having been used by American bombers for "defensive" strikes against Tehran during the Middle East war, following permission granted by former Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. Counter Terrorism Policing authorities emphasize the "hugely complex" nature of the investigation, which is exploring "multiple lines of enquiry," including possible foreign state involvement.
Senior National Coordinator Vicki Evans stated, "We're looking at all possible angles, including possible foreign state involvement." Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor assured the public that despite bail releases, the suspects remain under rigorous investigation with stringent conditions on their movement and contact.
Defence Secretary Wes Streeting praised the "exemplary" response of policing and security services.
