Jonathan Bailey, widely known for his role in "Bridgerton," announced his decision to step back from the project on Tuesday. His departure follows closely on the heels of Ariana Grande's exit, with whom he also starred in the upcoming "Wicked" films. Bailey shared a statement expressing his deep connection to the project and unwavering support for Grande.

He described the musical as a "brilliant, introspective" passion project and conveyed his excitement to see what the new actors would bring to the roles of George and Dot.

Bailey and Grande were set to portray the central characters, George and Dot, in the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, with previews originally scheduled for summer 2027. The musical, created by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, draws its inspiration from Georges Seurat's famous painting, "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte." It delves into a fictionalized account of the painter's life, exploring his artistic journey, professional hurdles, and his significant relationship with his mistress, Dot.

The original Broadway production in 1984, starring Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin, famously won two Tony Awards.

Ariana Grande's decision to withdraw from the production came a few weeks prior to Bailey's announcement.
