An explosive-laden drone was discovered near a Ukrainian plane at the Leipzig/Halle airport in east Germany late on Tuesday. This alarming find immediately prompted a counterterrorism investigation and fueled fears of another "hybrid attack" on European soil.
Airport workers made the discovery in a restricted cargo area, located near the southern runway at one of Europe’s largest cargo hubs. Following the incident, flights were temporarily suspended, and several aircraft had to be diverted from the airport. By Wednesday morning, most operations had resumed with one runway reopened, but the southern strip remained closed as specialists examined the drone and removed its detonator.
The incident was quickly labeled a "new threat scenario" by Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt following an emergency meeting with Germany's security heads. The drone was found in the immediate vicinity of a Ukrainian Antonov cargo plane, an airline that has used Leipzig/Halle as an operating base since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022.
While the investigation continues into the origins and intent behind the drone, authorities confirmed there was no immediate danger to passengers or airport staff during the incident.
Separately, a DHL cargo aircraft experienced a mid-air collision with an unknown object shortly after taking off from the same airport, adding another layer of concern to the unfolding events.
