A profound sense of sorrow has enveloped the congregation of City on a Hill, an independent Christian church based in Edinburgh, following the tragic discovery of one of their long-standing members, Elisabeth-Jane Ross, found deceased inside a suitcase in Athens. Known affectionately as “Lisa,” the 38-year-old was described by her pastor as a "precious" individual with a "big passion" for missionary work.
Pastor Peter Anderson shared an emotional tribute in a video message, conveying the church's immense grief. "It’s been a really tough week for our church," he stated. "We have lost a precious church member, Lisa. She was a member of our church for 20 years, and a very, very precious girl, and it’s a real tragic loss." He further emphasized her dedication, saying, "Lisa’s life was actually all about mission. She served people and she cared for people all over the world."
The grim discovery was made on July 18 by a homeless man in a derelict building located in the Kypseli area of Athens. Authorities believe Ms. Ross may have died between five and seven days before her body was found. Disturbingly, reports indicate that someone had been using her mobile phone to send messages, creating the false impression that she was still alive.
Greek police, the Hellenic Police, were able to identify Ms. Ross using fingerprints. Originally from Edinburgh, she had arrived in Greece on June 26, initially staying with friends in Piraeus. Her subsequent movements involved plans to meet American friends in another part of the Greek capital, though it remains unclear if this meeting ever took place.
A significant breakthrough in the case came with the arrest of a 26-year-old man, identified by Greek police as a foreigner. Following an intensive investigation, which included analyzing video footage, the suspect confessed on Thursday to putting Ms. Ross's body into a suitcase and transporting it to the abandoned site where it was later discovered. While he has admitted to hiding the body, reports indicate he denies murder. Police are now focusing on her final hours to uncover the motive behind this shocking event.
