External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently provided a comprehensive update to a parliamentary consultative committee regarding India's multifaceted engagement with Russia. The briefing highlighted a significant development: Russia has agreed to accept approximately 70,000 Indian skilled workers this year, particularly in critical sectors such as construction and logistics.
This move underscores a shared ambition between India and Russia to expand bilateral trade and investment in a balanced manner. Mr. Jaishankar emphasized India's focus on increasing its exports to Russia across seven key areas: automotive products, pharmaceuticals, food, marine products, engineering goods, chemicals, and textiles.
Additionally, energy cooperation remains a priority for New Delhi, with a strategy to maintain diverse supply sources to safeguard Indian consumer interests.
The meeting also touched upon India's diplomatic efforts concerning the Ukraine conflict.
Mr. Jaishankar reiterated India's consistent stance on supporting dialogue and diplomacy for a peaceful resolution.
He mentioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's interaction with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Bishkek, where PM Modi stressed that "endless war must now give way to end of war." India has actively offered its assistance in mediating an end to the conflict, with both Russian and Ukrainian officials, including Mr.
Putin and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, acknowledging India's constructive approach.
A crucial humanitarian issue discussed was the government's efforts to secure the release of Indian nationals serving in the Russian military. Mr. Jaishankar informed the panel that extensive engagement with Russian authorities, even at the highest levels, has led to the discharge of around 140 Indian nationals so far.
The Indian side is actively seeking information on the whereabouts of 55 other nationals reportedly working for the Russian Army, emphasizing the government's commitment to the well-being of its citizens abroad.
