New York's iconic Penn Station is slated for a massive $8 billion overhaul, but the renovation buzz is now overshadowed by a far more controversial possibility: renaming it after former President Donald Trump.
The Trump administration has reportedly signaled its desire to rename the Manhattan transit hub, a move that has already ignited public debate. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, in a letter to members of Congress, outlined "administration priorities" for the project, which explicitly included directing Amtrak to rename New York Penn Station.
While the letter didn't specify the new name, Duffy himself has previously mused about the idea, suggesting last August that "Trump Station" "has a nice ring to it." This isn't the first time the former president's name has been floated for the station, which is located in the heart of his hometown.
Reports have detailed various alleged tactics employed by Trump to push for the renaming. Last year, he reportedly froze billions in federal funding for a crucial rail project connecting New York and New Jersey. Politico reported in February that administration officials told Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer that the funds would be released if Penn Station and Washington Dulles International Airport were renamed after Trump. The president, however, dismissed this particular report as "MORE FAKE NEWS."
In another instance, Page Six reported in April that Trump attempted to leverage a secret meeting with James Dolan, the billionaire owner of the New York Knicks, to get his name emblazoned on Penn Station. Despite these reports, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle stated that "President Trump is focused on saving our country, not garnering recognition."
The potential renaming of a major public transit hub after a controversial political figure, especially one currently facing legal challenges and public scrutiny, has predictably sparked strong reactions. As the $8 billion renovation moves forward, the question of what New York's central train station will ultimately be called remains a hot topic, fueling speculation and debate across the city and beyond.
